A Project of the Department of Cultural Affairs’ Percent
for Art Program and the 122 Community Center
Deborah Berke & Partners Architects
Monika Goetz, Artist
The renovation of and addition to the 122 Community
Center by Deborah Berke & Partners Architects, and
installation of Inhale/Exhale and Independent Lines by
Monika Goetz, will establish a new public presence for an
institution that houses some of New York's most vibrant
avant-garde visual and performing arts presenters.
Independent Lines, four narrow strips of stainless steel
set in the building's forecourt paving, playfully transects
the orderly masonry ground plane and suggests movement,
drawing pedestrians from the street into the building.
Inhale/Exhale animates the building's nighttime lighting,
causing the cornice, canopy, stairwell B and lobby lighting
to "breathe" with life, and connecting the building to the
vigor of the artistic life within.
